Where the grocery money actually goes
Not a budget you set and forget. A record of what you really spent, sorted for you.
Everyone underestimates their grocery spend, and the reason is structural: it arrives as dozens of small transactions across several shops, which is exactly the shape a human is worst at totalling. Sorting it by category is the whole trick.
Categories that sort themselves
Transactions are categorised for you, not by you.
- Automatic categorisation of spending
- Correct one and it learns
- Household categories, not accounting ones
Budgets per category
A number per category beats one number for everything.
- Set a monthly figure per category
- See where you are against it
Fed by your receipts
Line-item detail, not just a total at the till.
- Scanned receipts break down by item
- See which items moved the number
The long view
A month is noise; a year is a pattern.
- Spending over time by category
- Monthly net-worth log alongside it
Questions
Do I have to connect a bank account?
No. Scanned receipts and manually entered expenses both work, and plenty of households run it that way.
What makes this different from a spreadsheet?
Mostly that you will still be using it in three months. A spreadsheet needs you to type every transaction; this one is fed by the shopping you were doing anyway.
Can two people track the same budget?
Yes — the budget belongs to the household, like the lists do. That is usually the point.
